String Trio

Thelma Handy is the Leader of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and has directed the orchestra and appeared as soloist on many occasions. She has made guest appearances as Leader with the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National, City of Birmingham Symphony, Manchester Camerata and the Real Filharmonía de Galicia. Recent solo performances include concertos by Glazunov, Sibelius, Bruch, Mendelssohn, Khatchaturian, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. She has given many broadcasts as a chamber musician and is
currently engaged in setting up the Wirral Chamber Music Festival, the opening season of which is now postponed until next year. Alex (viola) is Principal Viola in Manchester Camerata and Joint Assistant Principal Viola at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also a member of the Zelkova string quartet until 2019. He was awarded 5th prize at the 2015 Tokyo International Viola competition and 3rd prize at the 2012 Beethoven International Competion in Hradek. In his free time Alex enjoys walking in the Lake District with his wife Harriet, cooking and watching David Attenborough documentaries. Alex (cello) began playing the cello aged 8, before becoming head chorister of Portsmouth Cathedral and also gaining a diploma on the piano. After reading Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, he won scholarships to study cello at the Royal Academy of Music where he won several prizes. In 2007 he joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and has played with numerous orchestras, as guest principal for Aurora Orchestra and the Northern Chamber Orchestra.
He has given recitals for festivals throughout the UK and abroad, and has premiered various new works on Radio 3. He regularly appears with Pixels Ensemble and his improvisation trio White Lines.
